在中共的共産主義意識形態破滅、尤其是“六四”導致精神危機之後，毛澤東的繼承人們爲了維持一黨專制，高舉愛國主義旗幟，誇耀中國共產黨是抗日戰爭中的中流砥柱。

然而，在抗日戰爭中毛澤東與日軍串通勾結的歷史事實，很少有人知道，當局更絕口不提。

在中華民族面臨生死存亡的關頭，毛澤東竭盡全力削弱國民黨軍。1939 年秋天，他派遣潘漢年等中共間諜，潛伏到日本外務省下屬的“岩井公館”，把通過國共合作獲得的重慶政府的國民黨軍事情報高價賣給日本。

不僅如此。毛澤東還讓潘漢年向“岩井公館”的主人岩井英一提出“中共軍和日軍停戰”的提議。為了協商停戰一事，潘漢年通過岩井的介紹，與南京汪精衛政府的軍事顧問、日本陸軍將領影佐見面，又在影佐引薦下與汪精衛也見了面。

本書作者為抗戰期間出生於中國東北的日本教授。她根據岩井英一的回憶錄《回想的上海》，並遍搜日本外務省外交史料館的日方內部檔案，與中國大陸及台灣的資料進行對比，對“抗日戰爭中，毛澤東究竟做了些什麼？”“中共軍隊是如何發展壯大的？”等等問題，提供了發人深省的証據；揭示了毛澤東在戰後對日本舊軍人所說的感謝日本軍閥之辭，確實是發自肺腑。
