This book examines the rise of feminism in the Young Lords Party from 1969 to 1972 and the factors that advanced or derailed it. Women joined the organization to fight for the rights of Puerto Ricans and the decolonization of Puerto Rico. Feminists brought attention to gender injustice, challenged sexist ideas and practices, and organized campaigns for reproductive rights, childcare, ending gender violence, and other issues. In this seminal period for US feminists of color, women in the Young Lords allied with African American, Latina, Indigenous, and Asian feminists to end poverty and racism, and bring about systemic change. The feminist herstories of the Young Lords Party provide a nuanced account of the organization. They document an overlooked chapter in Puerto Rican and women's social movement history, not just to interpret the past but also to shape the future.
