Description

'Giving Voice to the Inner Scream' seeks to address the stigma of mental illness through the telling of personal stories and institutional policy surrounding it. The book is split into several sections, each of which examines different facets of mental illness and its portrayal in the media. In the first section Richard looks at people, including himself and celebrated journalist Hunter S. Thompson, that have featured in the media because of real or apparent mental illness. In the second part Richard looks at the mental health services of the UK and highlights some of the areas in which it is failing the people it is meant to help. 'Giving Voice to the Inner scream' is a well researched and enlightening book examining the role of the media in society's perception of mental illness. It is a helpful, if maybe controversial, addition to the mental health debate.
