Art Deco, which derived its name from the Paris Exposition International des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes of 1925, was the most fashionable style of design and interior decoration in the 1920s and 1930s in Europe and North America alike. Initially it was regarded as a luxury style. Its shapes, characteristically geometric or stylized, were created from costly materials such as ivory, jade and lacquer, but with the advent of the Depression it also found expression in materials that could be easily and economically mass-produced. Thus materials such as aluminium and Bakelite became increasingly popular, notably for household objects such as furniture, kitchenware and electrical appliances, and in architecture for private houses and shop-fronts as well as public buildings.
