Located in the northwest section of Michigan s Lower Peninsula, the river flows from east to west, roughly parallel and south of US10. Its headwaters form southeast of Baldwin, at the confluence of the Middle Branch and the Little South Branch, a place called the Forks . From there it winds its way westward by the towns of Baldwin, Branch, Walhalla, Custer, and Scottville until the P.M. empties into Lake Michigan a few feet south of the lighthouse in Ludington.
