Description

Brigham Henry Roberts (1857 -1933) was a Mormon leader, historian, and politician. He published a popular six-volume history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and also wrote Studies of the Book of Mormon. In 1908, his book "Joseph Smith the Prophet-Teacher," was published. As to methods of thinking, Mormon philosophizing is bound by no rules prescribed by any of the schools of thought. Both idealistic and empirical methods it employs; it recognizes both experience and thought as avenues to knowledge; and "both channels of knowledge as mutually indispensable." These subjects are somewhat elaborately discussed in the writer's book "Joseph Smith, The Prophet Teacher." It discusses the Prophet Joseph's correction of sectarian errors, his philosophical doctrines and some of his miscellaneous doctrinal utterances. The book is especially adapted for the use of missionaries. In discussing the meaning of the term "prophet" Roberts writes: "This term 'prophet'-what do you make of it? Generally, when you speak of a 'prophet.' you have in mind a predictor of future events, one who foretells things that are to come to pass, and indeed that is, in part, the office of a prophet-in part what is expected of him. But really this is the very least of his duties. A prophet should be a 'forth-teller' rather than a fore-teller. Primarily he must be a teacher of men, an expounder of the things of God. The inspiration of the Almighty must give him understanding, and when given he must expound it to his people, to his age. He must be a Seer that can make others see. A Teacher sent of God to instruct a people -to enlighten an age. This is the primary office of a prophet." Other books by Roberts include Corianton: A Nephite Story Defense of the Faith and the Saints The Gospel: An Exposition of its First Principles History of the "Mormon" Church The Life of John Taylor: Third President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints The Missouri persecutions The Mormon Battalion, Its History and Achievements The Mormon Doctrine of Deity Mormonism. The relation of the church to Christian sects. Origin and history of Mormonism. Doctrines of the church. Church organization. Present status.
