Si le XVIIIe siècle a bien été ce moment privilégié d'une émancipation de l'esprit et d'une foi en l'homme fondée sur la raison, on ne saurait cependant le réduire à l'œuvre des " philosophes " : ce siècle, qui fut aussi celui de la sensibilité, fut loin d'être soumis universellement au triomphe de l'esprit scientifique. C'est dans sa diversité que N. Hampson a voulu décrire cette Europe " éclairée ". L'auteur, selon le principe de cette série, a voulu établir les rapports qui lient entre eux les idées et les réalités sociales. Il examine aussi de manière originale le rôle des idées dans " l'ascension de la bourgeoisie ", remettant en cause à ce sujet bien des stéréotypes.
