Ecrites en Angleterre, les Lettres philosophiques (1 734) sont " la première bombe lancée contre l'Ancien Régime " (Gustave Lanson) : avant d'éclater au visage de la royauté de droit divin, elles condamnèrent leur auteur à l'exil. Remettant en cause les certitudes dont étaient pétris les Français d'alors, Voltaire y fustige les autorités en place nourri des théories de Newton et de Locke, il bat en brèche 1e cartésianisme ; attaquant Pascal, il tire à boulets rouges sur l'institution religieuse. Cette hostilité à l'esprit de système ne l'a plus jamais quitté. Farouchement opposé aux articles de la foi, il le fut aussi à l'athéisme, ainsi qu'en témoignent les brochures rédigées vers la fin de sa vie, de Tout en Dieu (1 769) à Il faut prendre un parti (1 775) en passant par Dieu (1 770) et les Lettres de Memmius à Cicéron (1 771), dans lesquelles 1e déisme voltairien se précise en une étonnante synthèse des idées de Leibniz, Malebranche et Spinoza.
