Fondé dans les 60's en Floride, Lynyrd Skynyrd s’imposera comme le groupe initiateur du rock sudiste et comme l’une des figures incontournables des 70's. Pourtant lorsque, en 1976, le Time lui consacre un article, la musique est effleurée et les frasques détaillées (alcool, violence, destruction de mobilier d’hôtel). Dans la trajectoire de Lynyrd Skynyrd, leur image a souvent éclipsé la musique et les malentendus ont souvent obscurci cette image. Ce livre raconte l’histoire, dans ses triomphes et ses tragédies, restitue la consistance du répertoire, et brosse le portrait de personnages hauts en couleur, qui s’extirpèrent des quartiers durs de Jacksonville pour tutoyer la gloire et s’en retrouver brutalement dépossédés après un accident d’avion qui coûta la vie à trois de leurs membres.
