Il y a quarante ans, le suicide de Ian Curtis mettait un terme à l’histoire de Joy Division. Au terme d’une carrière météorique, le groupe britannique laissait deux albums emblématiques, Unknown Pleasures et Closer, ainsi qu’une poignée de singles appelés à faire date, « Transmission », « Atmosphere » ou encore « Love Will Tear Us Apart ». Mieux encore, les quatre musiciens léguaient un son unique, ciselé sous la férule d’un producteur de génie, Martin Hannett, et qui n’a pas cessé depuis lors d’inspirer les musiciens du monde entier. L’étude qui suit se propose de revenir sur les chansons qui ont fait leur carrière, depuis leurs débuts sous le nom Warsaw à la longue transition d’un an conduisant les survivants de Joy Division à se réinventer via New Order. Pierre-Frédéric Charpentier est né en 1969. Enseignant et chercheur en histoire à Toulouse, il mène des recherches consacrées à l’histoire politique et culturelle au XXe siècle.
