Ce projet parle des musiciens qui, de près ou de loin, ont évolué avec Soft Machine, ont participé à l'aventure. D'abord le quatuor originel, Robert Wyatt (batteur), Kevin Ayers (bassiste et guitariste), Mike Ratledge (claviers), Daevid Allen (guitariste), sans oublier Hugh Hopper (bassiste), le cinquième membre, qui rejoindra le groupe à partir du second album. Ensuite les projets solos : Matching Mole de Robert Wyatt (avec Brian Eno aux synthés sur Little Red Record), puis la carrière solo de Robert Wyatt après son terrible accident qui le laissera paraplégique. Kevin Ayers and the Whole World (avec le jeune Mike Oldfield à la guitare). Gong de Daevid Allen, groupe atypique franco-anglo-australien baba cool (avec Steve Hillage à la guitare). C'est toute une partie de l'école de Canterbury qui évolue ici, mais ce n'est pas un ouvrage sur ce mouvement. C'est un essai sur la constellation Soft Machine.
