Un enfant nu d'une dizaine d'année qui errait dans les bois de la Bassine, près de Lacaune et qui s'enfuyait quand on s'en approchait fut capturé, le 8 janvier 1800, par le teinturier du village de Saint-Sernin. On décida son transfert à Saint-Affrique puis à Rodez et enfin à Paris, à l'Institut des Sourds-Muets. Jean Itard, qui fut chargé de son éducation, lui donna le prénom de Victor. «Plusieurs fois, dans le cours de l’hiver, je l’ai vu, en traversant le jardin des Sourds-Muets, accroupi à demi nu sur un sol humide, rester ainsi exposé, pendant des heures entières, à un vent frais et pluvieux. Ce n’est pas seulement pour le froid, mais encore pour une vive chaleur que l’organe de la peau et du toucher ne témoignait aucune sensibilité; il lui arrivait journellement quand il était auprès du feu et que les charbons ardents venaient à rouler hors de l’âtre, de les saisir avec les doigts et de les replacer sans trop de précipitation sur des tisons enflammés. On l’a surpris plus d’une fois à la cuisine, enlevant de la même manière des pommes de terre qui cuisaient dans l’eau bouillante; et je puis assurer qu’il avait même en ce temps-là, un épiderme fin et velouté.» (Jean Itard) Victor de L’Aveyron mourut à Paris en 1828.
