Pour répondre à la censure imposée par l'Eglise, les artistes ont rivalisé d'imagination pour cacher l'indécence proclamée : le sexe. Si la feuille de vigne est habituelle, d'autres motifs se révèlent à l'oeil attentif, à la fois surprenants, drôles et raffinés : un papillon, le froissé d'un drap, le sang du Christ, une chevelure ondoyante, un coquillage, une oie caressante...
