L'étude des relations franco-américaines présente un double intérêt. Il y a d'abord l'aspect bilatéral qui se caractérise par une dialectique de coopération et de conflit, qui par sa richesse événementielle et l'intensité dépassent de loin les relations que les Etats-Unis entretenaient avec d'autres alliés européens après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. L'autre aspect de la relation franco-américaine concerne sa dimension transatlantique car de son évolution dépend la dynamique future de l'unification politique et militaire de l'Europe.
