La dignité est l'une des notions éthiques aujourd'hui les plus sollicitées, particulièrement lorsqu'il est question des biotechnologies. Mais si elle est très souvent invoquée, il est difficile de savoir quel sens précis lui est donné. Il est donc nécessaire, si l'on veut éviter d'en rester à une éthique des " bons sentiments ", d'en clarifier la signification. C'est là une tâche complexe, en ce que ce concept a une double référence, à l'éthique d'une part (la dignité doit être respectée) et à l'anthropologie ou à la métaphysique d'autre part (la dignité est attachée à ce qu'est l'être humain). Bref, la dignité est une notion philosophique placée à la charnière de l'éthique et de l'anthropologie, entre ce qui doit être et ce qui est. Ayant élucidé le sens et la portée du concept de dignité, Bernard Baertschi examine ensuite si les biotechnologies contemporaines (le génie génétique, la procréation médicalement assistée, le clonage et les xénotransplantations) respectent ou non la dignité de l'être humain.
