Principles and guidelines for MPA managers developed by experts convened by the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA)-Marine of the IUCN, in collaboration with NOAA National Ocean Service's International Program Office. The guidance focuses on strengthening linkages between marine proteced areas and the wider coastal and marine area; developing governance arrangements to incorporate MPAs into the broader framework of integrated coastal and ocean management (ICOM); and fostering implementation of MPAs through enhanced policy and management tools. Includes worldwide case studies illustrating nine principles: 1) Connectivity between MPAs and the surrounding coastal and marine area; 2) Best available knowledge and information; 3) Benefits and outcomes; 4) Strengthened vertical and horizontal integration; 5) MPAs as part of ICOM; 6) Participatory planning of MPAs; 7) Resources and capacity; 8) Assessment of management effectiveness; and 9) Networks of MPAs.
