Les Frères Mineurs sont nés, ils peuvent maintenant répandre la parole de Dieu. Malgré de nombreuses persécutions, François et ses compagnons ne perdent jamais courage pour mener à bien leur mission. On les rencontre aux quatre coins du monde connu ; François, lui-même, se rend en Égypte puis en Palestine, avant de retourner dans son Italie natale où il s'éteint en 1226, marqué par les stigmates du Christ. Un homme d'exception promis à une postérité d'exception. L'Église en fera un saint. Bien plus qu'un édifiant ouvrage sur la vie spirituelle de cette figure majeure de l'Occident médiéval, le Saint François d'Ivan Gobry redonne une dimension profondément humaine au pauvre d'Assise ; un François bien loin de l'image hiératique qui est habituellement la sienne.
