Ray rêve de quitter le village de la Côte-Nord où il habite avec son père alcoolique, sa mère fatiguée et son frère Zeb, qui gagne leur vie en jouant aux cartes et en braconnant. Le roman est une lente élucidation des circonstances de la disparition de Zeb. Ray n’obtient d’abord pas de réponses aux questions qu’il pose. Le cadavre qu’il trouve et le meurtre auquel il assiste ne font qu’épaissir le mystère. C’est Lou qui lui apprendra finalement la dure vérité, Lou, l’amoureuse de Zeb qui rêvait de partir avec lui, elle aussi. Et c’est Beef, le sinistre patron du bar que Zeb fréquentait, qui lui donnera le fin mot de l’histoire. Une histoire d’amour et de vengeance. Une histoire de rêves avortés et d’ailleurs inaccessibles. Une histoire sombre et troublante, qui nous tient en haleine du début à la fin.
