Les élèves du Collège sont atterrés quand ils apprennent que leur voyage humanitaire au Guatemala n’aura pas lieu, à cause d’une crise politique majeure. « Et si on faisait notre aide humanitaire ici ? Dans le quartier d’en bas ? » Bien que des «T’es malade! À ce qu’il paraît, il y a des punaises de lit jusque dans les pupitres dans ce quartier-là!» fusent d’un peu partout, la professeure, elle, trouve l’idée géniale. C’est décidé: Tom, Sacha, Lucius, Sonia et Lee iront passer une semaine dans une école publique, dans le coin le plus pauvre de la ville, et ils seront même hébergés chez des élèves. De leur côté, Sympathy, Yannick, Tahfa et Kevin n’accueillent pas la nouvelle de cette visite avec plus d’entrain. « Combien de temps faudrait endurer une gang de snobs qui s’habillent avec des faux vieux vêtements pour avoir l’air cool ? » Ils accepteront tout de même l’épreuve : la promesse d’un A en français faite par le directeur est beaucoup trop alléchante.
