Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstocks Hermann-Dramen erschienen 1769, 1784 und 1787. Mit der großen Resonanz der „Hermanns Schlacht" wurde aus dem Messias-Dichter nun auch der Sänger Hermanns. Doch die beiden folgenden Dramen „Hermann und die Fürsten" und „Hermanns Tod" konnten an diesen Erfolg nicht mehr anknüpfen. Der Apparatband zu den Hermann-Dramen ergänzt die bereits im Textband als Fußnotenapparat verzeichneten Varianten einer zweiten Fassung, indem er in den Einzelapparaten nun alle Varianten aufführt, die den Erstdrucken vorausgehen, sowie alle Lesarten und Quellen. Dieses Verfahren wird in dem Kapitel „Zur Edition der Hermann-Dramen" begründet. Der Allgemeine Apparat referiert außerdem anhand ausgewählter Zeugnisse und Rezensionen die Entstehungs- und unmittelbare Wirkungsgeschichte der Dramen und erläutert in weiteren Einzelkapiteln Klopstocks kulturpolitische Bemühungen mit dem „Wiener Plan", die Rezeption der Dramen in den Vertonungen von Gluck und Kunzen, die Rolle von Cramers französischer Übersetzung der „Hermanns Schlacht" sowie die besondere formale Gestalt der Hermann-Dramen vor dem Hintergrund von Klopstocks Poetik.
