Die theologische Friedensethik Johannes Calvins (1509-1564) ist bislang wenig bekannt - zu Unrecht, wie Hofheinz zeigt. Er rekonstruiert die Friedensethik des Genfer Reformators erstmals ausführlich und analysiert dafür die Kommentare, Predigten, Briefe und Gelegenheitsschriften Calvins. Die besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt seiner Auslegung des Tötungsverbots des Dekalogs und der Auseinandersetzung mit dem täuferischen Pazifismus. Dabei tritt u. a. Calvins Rezeption der Lehre vom gerechten Krieg in den Blick, wie er sie im Rahmen einer Zweireiche-Lehre entfaltet. Der Frieden auf Erden hängt für Calvin mit dem Frieden Gottes zusammen. Calvin versteht den Frieden Gottes als ein "Ethos", d. h. einen Raum, in dem es zu leben gilt. Der in diesem Raum beheimatete Mensch kann nach Calvin in Kirche und Gesellschaft friedensstiftend tätig sein. Aus diesem "Ethos" heraus versucht der Genfer Reformator, friedensethische Urteilsbildung im Horizont des Reiches Gottes zu vollziehen. Insbesondere in seinen Predigten und Briefen an verfolgte Glaubensgeschwister mahnt Calvin, den Frieden Gottes auch in den konfliktträchtigen Kommunikationsprozessen auf Erden gelten zu lassen.
