Johann Caspar Lavater (1741-1801), Pfarrer, Philosoph und Schriftsteller, wird meist nur in Verbindung mit seiner Physiognomik wahrgenommen. Dies vermag aber nicht sein ganzes Wirken abzubilden. Lavater war beseelt von der Aufbruchsstimmung seiner Zeit. Er ubertrug die Ideale des Sturm und Drang auf die Theologie. Damit loste er den christlichen Glauben aus dem Korsett des dogmatischen Glaubens und der moralisierenden Frommigkeit seiner Zeit. Er zeigte den Weg zu einem individuellen Glauben, der nicht von Dogma und Moral genahrt wird, sondern von der Empfindsamkeit, der Selbstergrundung und der Beobachtungsgabe des einzelnen Menschen. Ueli Greminger, Pfarrer am Zurcher St. Peter, zeichnet diesen Weg anhand ausgewahlter Stationen aus dem Leben und Wirken des Schweizer Theologen nach.
