La relation entre l'Orient et l'Occident est un sujet central dans la litterature du 19eme siecle. Des expeditions et des recits de voyage au 17eme et 18eme siecle renforcerent l'interet pour l'Egypte. Le comparatiste Edward Said defend la these qu'au 19eme siecle, les Europeens developperent une vision eurocentriste de l'Orient. Suite a l'expedition d'Egypte de Napoleon beaucoup de livres celebrerent la soumission du pays et l'apport de normes occidentales. L'Egypte sert de fond a la mise en scene du mythe de Napoleon. On y cherche des dimensions profondes d'une vue du monde dont le centre est l'Europe. Pourtant, la litterature francaise de la seconde moitie du 19eme siecle exprime une certaine deception a l'egard de ces decouvertes. <I>L'Almeh est le premier texte qui exprime cette vue qu'on retrouve plus tard chez Flaubert, Nerval ou Gautier. Le roman, ecrit en 1828/29, conteste la superiorite des normes occidentales, critique la vue de l'Europe sur l'Egypte et nie qu'on puisse y trouver une solution aux problemes occidentaux."
