Auf Anraten seines Vaters und seines Onkels nimmt er die Erbschaft an. Auf Dominica angekommen, lernt er die gleichaltrige Kreolin Mercedes kennen, die Tochter des Verwalters der Plantage. Schnell erkennen beide, dass sie trotz des Standesunterschiedes sich zugetan sind. Tony Winford erfährt aber auch von dem dunklen Geheimnis, welches Mercedes umgibt. Der Pflanzer Sohn Johan Closter tat ihr Übles an und ging damals straffrei aus. Jetzt als reife Frau, steht Mercedes wieder in Closters Blickfeld. Doch diesmal mischt sich ihr Beschützer Tony Winford ein, und es kommt zu einem Kampf auf Leben und Tod. Closters Farmhaus wird niedergebrannt und ein offener Krieg zwischen den Closters und den Winfords entbrennt. Und wieder gerät Mercedes in Gefangenschaft bei Closter, doch sie kann befreit werden. Wieder zurück auf Dominica kommt es zum Finale zwischen den Closters und den Winfords, und Tony Winford macht sich mit seinem Freund Ben Mosley auf, den Verbrecher Closter endgültig zu vernichten.
