Eine Patientenverfügung stellt eine einzigartige Festlegung für eine Situation dar, deren Bedeutung für viele Menschen weder aus medizinischer noch aus juristischer Sicht hinreichend klar ist. Anhand von Beispielen werden die Bedeutung, aber auch die Risiken dargestellt, die mit einer Patientenverfügung verknüpft sind. Dabei wird er auch auf die aktuelle Rechtsprechung zur Patientenautonomie und zu den Voraussetzungen für eine Gültigkeit von Patientenverfügungen eingegangen.
