Die Independence, jenes Raumschiff, das die Menschen ins Siriussystem und zum Exoplaneten brachte, macht sich auf den Rückflug in Richtung Erde. Der Abschied fällt schwer, denn mit dem Aufbruch des Raumschiffes sind die Menschen sowie die planetare Basis namens Azores endgültig auf sich alleingestellt. Und tatsächlich offenbaren sich schon bald nach dem Abflug der Independence die ersten Probleme. Eine Bedrohung taucht auf, so mächtig, dass der Fortbestand der Bodenbasis und seiner sechstausendzweihundert Bewohner plötzlich in Frage steht. Die Menschen von Azores müssen sich der Gefahr entgegenstellen und das Blatt zu ihren Gunsten wenden. Es kommt zu Vorfällen und zu immer neuen Auseinandersetzungen, die mit Opfern und Verlusten verbunden sind. Dabei stellen die um ihr Überleben kämpfenden Basisbewohner, zu denen auch Corporal Marc Ewert gehört, sehr rasch fest, dass sie nach jedem bitter errungenen Sieg vor einem noch größeren Problem stehen. Um der eigenen Existenz Willen wagen sie abenteuerliche Missionen, um die Bedrohung auszuschalten.
