Das Gemälde der Virgen del Cerro, der Jungfrau im Silberberg, aus Potosí in Bolivien dokumentiert, wie einheimische Künstler während der Kolonialzeit Motive aus der Tradition der Anden in Bildern mit christlicher Ikonographie versteckten. Mit dieser widerständigen Praxis retteten sie Teile ihrer eigenen Kultur und schufen zugleich eine hybride Bild-Theologie. Deren wichtigste Elemente werden in der Arbeit mit Hilfe von Ansätzen aus den postcolonial studies, der Bild-Philosophie und der Ethnologie entschlüsselt. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Verbindung von europäisch- katholischen Frömmigkeitselementen mit Konzepten aus der andinen Kosmovision, wie den heiligen Bergen oder der Mutter Erde, die bolivianische Volksreligiosität bis heute prägt. Abschließend weist der Autor nach, dass diese Art von andiner Theologie angesichts gegenwärtiger Herausforderungen wie der ökologischen Krise erstaunliche Aktualität besitzt.
