Cet ouvrage documente des situations où l'intervention sociale semble impossible. L'accent est mis sur l'intraitabilité, caractéristique liée aux spécificités du public mais également à la temporalité de l'intervention, pleinement inscrite dans l'ici et maintenant. Les exemples exposés ici – fruit d'une enquête ethnographique dans un Centre d'Hébergement et de Réinsertion Sociale – ne participent pas d'une politique de réduction des risques à l'usage de substances mais d'une contenance des risques. Ce travail expose une série de situations qui renseignent cette intraitabilité et renvoie également au travail conduit dans le cadre d'un suivi du Revenu Minimum d'Activité (RMA), à l'accompagnement des personnes en situation de handicap lourd, des personnes en fin de vie ou bien des adolescents dits difficiles. Il s'agit d'une invitation à penser les interventions empêchées, une problématique transversale et permanente, constitutive des métiers du social.
