Im Jahr 1872 wurde durch eine Verfügung des preußischen Ministers der geistlichen und Unterrichtsangelegenheiten die Alte Geschichte als eine eigene Abteilung des Historischen Seminars der Philipps-Universität konstituiert. Am Beispiel der Geschichte des Seminars bis zum Ende der 1960er Jahre werden die komplexen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Wissenschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft im Fach Alte Geschichte vor dem Hintergrund einer modernen Universitätsgeschichte untersucht. Hierzu wurde sowohl ein biografischer als auch ein strukturgeschichtlicher Zugang gewählt.
