Die Berliner Mauer war wirkmachtiges Symbol nicht nur einer fast drei Jahrzehnte lang geteilten Stadt, sondern auch der scheinbar unuberwindbaren Fronten von Ost- und Westmachten nach 1945. Der Mauerfall am 9. November 1989 markierte eine bedeutende Zasur in der Geschichte des Kalten Krieges und ebnete den Weg fur ein wiedervereintes Deutschland. Heute ist dieses monstrose Bauwerk im Berliner Stadtbild nahezu verschwunden ebenso wie die Erinnerung an den Grenzverlauf. Nicht nur Touristen, auch Einheimische stehen bisweilen ratlos am Brandenburger Tor, am ehemaligen Checkpoint Charlie oder in der Bernauer Straae auf der Suche nach Zeugnissen der verschwundenen Grenze. Der Fotograf Harry Hampel dokumentiert mit seiner Kamera seit Jahrzehnten die bekannten, aber auch die weniger prominenten, abseits der Touristenziele gelegenen (ehemaligen) Mauerabschnitte. Besonders ist, dass er alle Straaen, Platze und Stadtraume vor und nach dem Mauerfall aus derselben Perspektive fotografiert. So stehen die historischen und aktuellen Aufnahmen einander gegenuber und konfrontieren die Geschichte mit der Gegenwart.
