Gregor Cornelius, emeritierter Münchner Geschichtsprofessor, freut sich auf seinen Urlaub bei Freunden im niederbayerischen Neukirchen. Drei Tage vor dem Schäfflertanz findet Julian Bernbacher, der erste Vortänzer, eine tote Ratte auf seinem Auto, wenig später erhält er eine Todesanzeige, seine Todesanzeige, kurz danach wird sein bester Freund bei einem Autounfall schwer verletzt. Cornelius beginnt nachzuforschen und befindet sich bald mitten in einem erschütternden Familiendrama - und in großer Gefahr.
