Addyman berichtet von der vorgeburtlichen Entwicklung, macht deutlich, wie sich gleich nach der Geburt die Bindung zwischen Mutter und Kind aufbaut, dass das erste Lächeln ­immer authentisch ist und Ausdruck davon, dass das Baby glücklich ist, satt und zufrieden. Er befragt psychoanalytische und philosophische Konzepte, erklärt, wie sich Babys durch ­einfache Vergnügungen wie Kitzeln und beim Baden mit Wasserspritzen ihres Körpers bewusst werden, was Lächeln im Schlaf bedeutet, wie wichtig Berührungen und Musik sind, und dass das Kuckuck-Spiel, das alle Babys begeistert, die reine soziale Interaktion ist.
