Beowulf (möglicherweise altenglisch für „Bienen-Wolf“) ist ein frühmittelalterliches episches Heldengedicht in angelsächsischen Stabreimen. Mit seinen 3.182 Versen stellt es das bedeutendste erhaltene Einzelwerk angelsächsischer Sprache dar. Das Epos entstand vermutlich nach dem Jahr 700 und spielt in der Zeit vor 600 n. Chr. in Skandinavien. Beowulf fährt mit 14 Gefährten nach Dänemark zu König Hrothgar, um diesem beizustehen. Die große Halle des dänischen Königs, Heorot, wird von Grendel, einem menschenverschlingenden Ungeheuer (eventuell in der Tradition nordischer Trolle), heimgesucht. In zwei Kämpfen tötet Beowulf zunächst Grendel mit seinen bloßen Händen und danach dessen auf Rache sinnende Mutter mit dem Schwert eines Riesen.
