Si kecil Heidi dititipkan Bibi Dete kepada kakeknya yang tinggal di Pegunungan Alm. Mulanya para tetangga mengira Heidi tidak akan kerasan tinggal bersama Kakek yang pemarah, tapi ternyata mereka bisa hidup rukun. Heidi berteman dengan Peter, si gembala kambing, dan setiap hari ikut menggembala di padang rumput. Suatu hari, Bibi Dete datang lagi hendak mengambil Heidi untuk dibawa ke kota, bekerja di rumah majikannya, untuk menemani Clara yang cacat. Heidi merasa iba dan ingin menolong Clara. Lambat laun Clara mulai membaik. Setelah beberapa waktu tinggal di kota, Heidi merindukan kampung halamannya, juga Kakek, Peter, nenek Peter, dan kambing-kambing Peter. Dia ingin pulang, tetapi keinginannya ditolak Bibi Dete. Heidi yang ceria mulai menjadi pemurung. Sementara itu, di rumah keluarga Clara ada kehebohan, sebab ada hantu yang konon suka bergentayangan pada malam hari.
