Tanizaki Junichiro là một thiên tài văn chương với một văn nghiệp đồ sộ. Ông là người kể chuyện có duyên nhất trong những cây viết tiền chiến, nội dung các tác phẩm của ông phần nhiều khai thác cảnh sống hoan lạc, đồi phế của xã hội cũ đang suy tàn và miền sâu thẳm phong kín của địa ngục nội tâm con người muôn thuở. Thời hậu chiến, khi ông viết về cuộc sống tình dục lập tức có lời kết tội là ông đã viết truyện dâm ô. Hơn nửa thế kỷ đi tìm cái đẹp, ông chỉ tìm thấy “cái đẹp có vấn đề”. Trong con người ông, cái đẹp cũng là niềm hoan lạc vật chất, trong ẩm thực, trong tính dục… Tiểu thuyết CHỮ VẠN của ông đưa người đọc đến với tình yêu cháy bỏng, ham muốn mãnh liệt và khát khao chinh phục. Tôn giáo và tự tử, ám ảnh tính dục và thờ phụng cái đẹp luôn có mối liên hệ chặt chẽ trong tất cả các trước tác của Tanizaki.
