Mientras el pintor Basil Hallward retrata a Dorian Gray, la conversación de Lord Henry Wotton induce al joven al hedonismo y le abre los ojos ante la brevedad de la juventud. Basil imprime en el lienzo su obsesión y adoración por la belleza de Dorian y lo baña en halagos. Poco después, el pintor Basil Hallward envía el retrato a casa de Dorian, al sentir que había puesto demasiado de su alma en él, y que, por lo tanto, era incapaz de destinarlo a una exposición... De aquí en adelante, el protagonista de la novela mostrará un proceso de envilecimiento impulsado por el temor ante la muerte inexorable, pero sobre todo ante la pérdida de la belleza, fuente de su poder e influencia social.
