A primeira edição foi publicada anonimamente – as editoras não acreditavam que uma menina tão jovem pudesse escrever daquela maneira. Posteriormente, o livro foi revisado e republicado em 1831, em edição que contava com introdução da autora e considerada a versão definitiva.
