As plantas são fontes riquíssimas de analogias em diversas áreas da cultura popular. Não sabemos quando isso começou... mas há registros de alguns já na Grécia antiga, como o “pomo da discórdia”, entre outros, além de várias delas serem tomadas como parábolas na bíblia e outras referências em diversos livros religiosos. Um dos registros mais antigos que se refere à planta com outra prática que não a da alimentação está no Livro X da Odisseia (séc. VIII a.C.). O deus Mercúrio dera a planta moli a Ulisses para que ele a ingerisse e se tornasse um antídoto contra os sortilégios da feiticeira Circe, anulando então todo tipo de encantamento que ela viesse fazer. Essa planta é parecida com o alho e também é citada em Harry Potter. Várias áreas do conhecimento humano se utilizam dos nomes das plantas e partes ora de forma análoga (na anatomia humana e zoológica), ora por falta de termo próprio (na história [árvore genealógica], matemática [raiz, tabuada], engenharia em geral [planta]) e ainda de forma jocosa ou tabuística (particularidades do corpo humano, muitas relacionadas ao sexo [banana, cebola quente, goiaba...]) etc.
