学科教育学是在20世纪70年代发展起来的新兴学科群体，其中当以数学学科教育比较领先。数学学科教育作为学科教育的重要内容和表现形式，以当时的社会历史和文化为背景，随着数学学科的发展而发展，并经过历次改革而不断丰富。随着我国教育改革的不断深入与数学教育研究的不断深化，无论是数学教育观念，还是数学教师的角色都发生了深刻变化，各种新思想和新理论不断涌现，各种相应的教学改革实验也相继展开，这已成为世界数学教育改革的潮流。邓小平同志的“教育要面向现代化，面向世界，面向未来”昭示人们：要赶上世界数学教育发展的潮流，结合我国数学教育的成功经验，建立起具有中国特色的数学教育体系，是我们面临的任务，21世纪为数学学科教育将带来新的发展契机。可以预见，21世纪我国的数学学科教育必将进入一个新的发展阶段，达到一个全新的理论水平，为数学学科教育的研究提供更加广阔的用武空间。在这样的一个背景下，数学教育的理论研究仍然有许多空白需要填补，数学教育需要运用现代的先进教育理论、观念和科学方法，需要在已有的基础上进一步深入地开展研究工作，以适应不断发展的新形势。基于此，撰写了本书。
