本書以“人文宗教”概括中國的宗教觀,詮釋儒釋道三教與民間宗教信仰的共同基盤。人文立本,感應為體,是人文宗教的基本特徵,有別於西方宗教學對“宗教”的界定。人文宗教並不排斥對神的信仰和崇拜,但首先重視個人修身與社會責任。文與神的關係,即禮教與宗教的並存,遠比人神關係重要。

全書共分五章:“人文宗教:中國宗教史的核心範疇”,“天道人情:中國宗教的思想基礎”,“感應道交:中國宗教的神秘體驗”,“會通共生:中國宗教的關係格局”,“混元並用:日常生活的信仰圖景”。作者立足中國人的信仰傳統與日常生活,以世界史的眼光,將“人文宗教”視為一種世界宗教的基本類型。
