本書是社科基金專案（16BKS072）的結項成果。激進思想傳統是美國政治文化發展中不可或缺的重要組成部分。本書基於文本解讀的視角，對20世紀以降美國激進思想傳統的文化根源、政治願景、變革路徑、實踐影響等進行了全景式的描繪，並分別對種族、性別、人與自然、關係、全球人類命運以及激進文學和影視文化等這些相對獨立但又不失內在聯繫的多個專題予以詳盡論述。在厘清激進思想的基督教異端、海盜政治信條、啟蒙哲學等多重根源基礎上，系統揭示了激進思想中意涵的制度與和平變革的特質，對現狀的全然顛覆和對和平路徑的偏好始終貫穿於各種激進思想的主題之中。本書認為，激進思想傳統通過內化於美國主流價值體系而構成20世紀美國社會持續發展和變遷的內在動力，雖然目前面對政治影響被邊緣化的現實挑戰，但是資本主義自身不可克服的種種頑症和固有矛盾決定了美國激進思想傳統的未來依舊充滿機遇與希望。
 
貧困不是收入比別人低多少那麼簡單，它是自我維持的文化體系表現，它落後保守並在代際傳遞，滲透於窮人的社會參與、經濟生活、家庭關係和社區環境之中。如果人們能夠從所在的關係網絡、信任及社團等社會互動中獲取社會資源，那麼他們不但能夠獲得自身創造收入的能力和機會，甚至可能在某種程度上降低社會排斥的程度，這正符合社會資本理論的思想。

作為“窮人的資本”，社會資本能夠給貧困群體提供非正式保險機制，緩解外部對貧困家庭成員的負面衝擊，同時能夠有效地促進農村勞動力的流動，增加農民工的就業和收入。本書以社會資本為視角和核心工具，從財政支農、勞動力轉移、公共品供給、農村借貸和貧困代際傳遞等諸方面研究了農村減貧的機制和效應，把農村減貧看作作為非正式制度的社會資本發揮作用的結果。對農村減貧促進因素的定量分析，有助於準確把握促進農村減貧的方向，為我國的農村減貧事業提供理論支撐和實踐依據。
