Description

It is not a long time since the primary tools of technology were invented and we are not very old to forget the beginning of computer age and its subsequent technologies. Now we are at the onset of a revolution in the science and technology named nano-science and nanotechnology which deal with the design, characterization, production, application and investigation of behavior of materials and systems in the atomic, molecular or nanometer scales. Nanoscience and nanotechnology actually is a new view to traditional science and technologies and it will affect most areas of human life. Polymer science and technology are already affected by it and it seems nanoscience and nanotechnology have changed their routes. They set new topics in science and technical applications of polymeric materials, and expose unique opportunities in the performance and application of these materials. Enhancing the properties of traditional polymers and preparation of new products by using nanoscience and nanotechnology has currently received an exceptional interest from the researchers, technology incubators and commercial organizations for going forward in introducing the materials which have new nanocomposite or hybrid structures, new properties, and new performance standards. The relation between nanotechnology and polymer science and technology goes back to the progress and modification of the traditional polymers either by nanomaterials and synthesis of well-defined and tailored polymers in one hand, or macromolecules having nanometer size, new structure and properties, in the other. Due to the importance of polymers with a well-defined structure, this book will focus on the later section. Clearly the explanation of nanotechnological applications of even one class of novel polymers in all areas is a demanding task. However, we will try to focus on the especial types of polymers and their applications in special areas. Well-defined and three dimensional structure, small size, high functionality, cavity and other interesting properties differentiate dendrimers and dendritic polymers from other polymers and macromolecules and make them unique building blocks for using in nanotechnology. In our previous book entitled Novel Polymers and Nanoscience we focused on the synthesis and preparation of novel polymers such as dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers, star polymers, conductive polymers and hybrid materials. This book explains some of applications of these polymers in some areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology such as nanomedicine, nanocatalyst, nanocomposites, nanopatterning and imprinting.
