Da Marsilio Ficino i verket De amore (1469) gjendiktet Platons Symposion og lot fem samtidige tale ved en ny bankett til ære for Eros, gjenoppvekket han to store døde tradisjoner. På den ene side den platonske kjærlighetsfilosofien, som hadde ligget i dvale siden senantikken, og på den andre side den florentinske genre for filosofiske kommentarer til kjærlighetsdiktning, som hadde blomstret omkring 1300 med Dante Alighieri og Guido Cavalcanti. I denne boka ser Unn Irene Aasdalen på tilblivelsen av en av den italienske renessansens sterkeste litterære genre, de nyplatonske trattati d’amore, kjærlighetstraktatene. Hun legger avgjørende vekt på Ficinos De amore som opprinnelsesverket til genren og analyserer videre drivkreftene i den filosofiske og litterære diskusjonen rundt tekstene til sentrale aktører i den nyplatonske renessansen: Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Pietro Bembo, Baldassare Castiglione, Leone Ebreo og Tullia d’Aragona.
