Conocidas desde la Antigüedad, muy pronto las Canarias constituyeron un espacio familiar para los marinos que surcaban el Atlántico rumbo a África y a América. La afluencia de viajeros franceses al Archipiélago fue especialmente fructífera a partir de Setecientos cuando el interés por alcanzar el mítico continente austral, ubicado en el Pacífico, estimuló la búsqueda de nuevas rutas marítimas y convirtió a las islas en la antesala de “las Islas Occidentales” , esto es, el lugar idóneo para hacer aguada y adquirir vino y alimentos frescos indispensables para proseguir la travesía.
