Las obras teatrales recopiladas en este volumen muestran la faceta más vanguardista y clarividente de la dramaturga estadounidense Susan Glaspell. Adoptando desde un estilo trágico, psicológico y profundo, hasta uno ligero y humorístico, trata temas esenciales, como la lucha por la igualdad social y política de las mujeres en Estados Unidos o la apremiante necesidad de la solidaridad entre estas. Dichas temáticas reflejan cómo Glaspell experimenta en primera línea, y a menudo sobrepasa, sus tempranas ideas vanguardistas, precedentes de las de su amigo Eugene O’Neill. ‘En las afueras’ (‘The Outside’) describe con tintes poéticos el revelador contraste entre lo topográfico y lo psicológico para abordar la experiencia del duelo en clave de género. En ‘El honor de una mujer’ (‘Woman’s Honor’), opta por crear seis personajes femeninos conflictivos y lanzados en pos de soluciones alegóricas. Finalmente, el protagonista de ‘El reloj de sol’ (‘Tickless Time’) insiste en reinventarse tomando como base la noción del tiempo y las horas. La traductora ha sabido trasladar todo el color de los diálogos originales y, además, acompaña cada pieza teatral de un ensayo crítico que contextualiza la época y su ambiente.
