La presente tesis doctoral pretende interpretar la evolución del régimen político liberal en la época isabelina partiendo de la transformación de las instituciones del Antiguo Régimen hasta llegar al liberalismo. También trata de desvelar las relaciones existentes entre los sustentadores del poder económico y los cargos políticos que ocupan a nivel local y provincial. Asimismo, se estudian las leyes y reglamentos electorales que influyen en la creación de los censos y distritos electorales provinciales. Se analizan las fuerzas políticas que intervienen —directa o indirectamente— en la lucha electoral: moderados, progresistas, unionistas y carlistas, así como las elecciones celebradas en este periodo. Y, por último, se hace un estudio sobre las familias políticas que influyeron a nivel local, provincial y nacional.
