Además, muestra la profunda desigualdad social entre la élite y el campesinado, y la búsqueda de la felicidad del ser humano, que alcanza tras una metamorfosis espiritual. La novela ha sido llevada al cine en más de diez adaptaciones, y también sido adaptada a producciones teatrales y ópera.
