Rosmini pensó la Introducción a la filosofía como primer volumen de una colección que habría de incluir sus obras ya publicadas, otras todavía no impresas y, finalmente, varias que pensaba escribir en lo sucesivo. Las secciones que lo componen fueron redactadas durante un espacio de más de veinte años y solamente las dos iniciales fueron concebidas expresamente para esa publicación. En la primera, Rosmini ofrece una suerte de autobiografía intelectual; allí refiere también cuál es la intención última de su filosofía y cómo la ha llevado acabo durante sus años de escritor. La segunda es una extensa meditación sobre la sabiduría que busca el filósofo, que abarca tanto el conocimiento racional como el que se puede obtener de lo sobrenatural gracias a la Revelación cristiana. En ella Rosmini traza las grandes líneas que demuestran la perfecta armonía entre la razón y la Revelación, ya que ambas tienen un mismo origen, y ofrece un perfil del hombre sabio, quien no solo contempla la verdad, sino que busca unirse a ella mediante la virtud.
