El pensamiento de René Descartes (1596-1650) inauguró la modernidad al colocar al sujeto como protagonista de la filosofía. Su célebre expresión cogito ergo sum es un lugar común en nuestra cultura. Sus Meditaciones metafísicas son un modelo de ensayo filosófico; y el Discurso del método, uno de los textos más claros, conocidos y comentados de la filosofía moderna. Articuló de forma admirable filosofía y ciencia, logrando un modo de pensar estrictamente racional para contribuir al descubrimiento de la verdad. Expuso un método científico basado en la razón que eclipsó al de Aristóteles y clausuró la Edad Media, dando paso a una nueva época de expansión y libertad. La separación de mente y cuerpo, en dos órdenes diferentes de realidad (otro de los notables descubrimientos de Descartes), produjo escándalo en su tiempo. Inspiró el mecanicismo y el materialismo y hasta el ateísmo modernos, pero también franqueó las puertas a la revolución científica. Autores tan influyentes como Spinoza, Voltaire, Rousseau o Newton, y tantas otras personalidades célebres, poco hubieran logrado sin Descartes.
