En el otoño de 1975, Bob Dylan y su Rolling Thunder Revue –un espectáculo que Dylan había proyectado como una mezcla de happening y circo ambulante– recorrieron veintidós ciudades del noreste de los Estados Unidos. La detención del boxeador Huracán Carter, al parecer por motivos racistas, fue el detonante de esta gira, que se inició con improvisados conciertos en pequeños escenarios de Nueva Inglaterra. Ante la perplejidad de un público de provincias, una banda formada por músicos de fama mundial reinventaba la tradición musical americana, los poetas declamaban sus versos y todos los participantes subían al escenario disfrazados, mientras las cámaras de mano no perdían detalle. Estaban Joni Mitchell, T-Bone Burnett, Allen Ginsberg, Mick Ronson, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Roger McGuinn y Muhammad Alí. Y también se encontraba allí Sam Shepard para ir escribiendo sobre la marcha el guión de una película fellinesca y surrealista que saldría de la propia gira. Ese guión no llegó a materializarse, pero Shepard fue escribiendo la crónica de aquel viaje, un diario de bitácora de la Rolling Thunder Revue y la vida en la carretera. En ese escenario itinerante y en este libro se entremezclan reminiscencias judías y mexicanas con la poesía inglesa, cowboy-slang con mitos indios (de ahí el nombre del Tour), la imaginería católica con el blues... Este libro, que apareció publicado por primera vez en 1977 y se ha convertido en todo un clásico de la literatura-rock, es todo lo contrario de un álbum de fans: es un diario hecho de observaciones desde el ojo del huracán.
